CLIMATE CHANGE PROJECTS

01

Restoration of mangroves, seagrasses and macroalgae.

These marine and coastal ecosystems are vital for carbon capture and protection against the impacts of climate change.

  • Mangroves store up to 1,000 tons of CO₂ per hectare per year, funtion as natural barriers and are home to many species.

  • Macroalgae capture up to 2.8 tons of CO₂ per hectare per year and help reduce ocean acidification.

  • Seagrasses sequester carbon 35 times faster than tropical forests and can store up to 83,000 tons per square kilometer per year.

The goal is to empower communities across the country to reforest and restore mangroves, seagrasses, and macroalgae — strengthening the resilience of coastal marine ecosystems and improving the livelihoods of local communities.

Coral Restoration

Coral reef restoration is crucial to address the accelerated loss of marine biodiversity and to protect vulnerable coastal communities.

  • Corals host between 25% and 30% of all marine life, despite covering less than 1% of the ocean floor

  • They form natural barriers that reduce wave energy by up to 97%, protecting coastlines.

  • Additionally, healthy reefs support local economies through fishing and tourism.

At FOMARES, we aim to be at the forefront of restoring this vital ecosystem.
